What is BIS notified Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS)?
In 03rd October 2012, the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) (erstwhile DeitY) in cooperation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to protect Indian consumers from unauthentic and substandard goods.
Process of notifying the product categories by MeitY in respective phases
- On 03rd October 2012MeitY notified 15 product categories of electronics items by issuing the Gazette of India
- On 13th November 2014, MeitY has added more 15 product categories of electronics and IT items
- On 24th October 2016, MeitY has also notified Indian Standard for ‘Indian Language Support for Mobile Phones’
- On 23rd August 2017, MeitY has added more 13 product categories which includes all Led products, CCTV’s and other IT items
- On 1st April 2020, MeitY has notified more 12 categories which includes electronics and household items
- On 1st October 2020, MeitY has notified more 7 categories which includes other IT items.
- On 05th September 2017, Ministry of New and Renewal Energy(MNRE) has notified five products under Solar Photovoltaic, Systems, Devices and Components Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2017
As per the Orders, no person shall manufacture or store for sale, import, sell or distribute goods which do not conform to the Indian standard specified in the order and do not bear the Standard Mark with unique registration number obtained from BIS.
To be particular, there is a total of 78 products category that have been recognized till now, out of which 63 products are added by MEITY, 5 by MNRE, and 10 by MHIPE. For your convenience, we are providing a BIS product list table with all the products names and Indian Standard required under BIS compulsory registration scheme at the end of this article.
Who can apply ?
Manufacturer (factory owner) either manufacturing in India or Outside INDIA and willing to do business in INDIA in a product category which comes under the ambit of the Compulsory Registration Order (CRO) notified by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) or Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) can apply through CRS portal
